What is VA Aid and Attendance?
Aid and Attendance is an increase to the VA's needs-based Veterans Pension and Survivors Pension for wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities, are bedridden, are in a nursing home, or have limited eyesight; it raises the Maximum Annual Pension Rate rather than arriving as a separate check.
VA pays the difference between that maximum rate and the household's countable income. The key mechanic is that unreimbursed medical and care costs, including assisted living care fees and home care, reduce countable income, which is how a veteran with a solid pension can still qualify.
How much is Aid and Attendance in 2026?
For December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2026, the maximum annual pension rate with Aid and Attendance is $29,093 for a veteran with no dependents (about $2,424 a month) and $18,697 for a surviving spouse with no dependents (about $1,558 a month); the net worth limit is $163,699.
| Household | Maximum annual pension rate | About per month |
|---|---|---|
| Veteran with no dependents, Aid and Attendance | $29,093 | $2,424 |
| Veteran with one dependent, Aid and Attendance | $34,488 | $2,874 |
| Two veterans married to each other, both A&A | $46,143 | $3,845 |
| Surviving spouse, no dependents, Aid and Attendance | $18,697 | $1,558 |
| Veteran with no dependents, Housebound | $21,313 | $1,776 |

Net worth includes assets plus annual income; a primary home is generally excluded. VA also applies a look-back to asset transfers, so get advice before moving money.
How does Aid and Attendance help pay for assisted living in Knoxville?
If a veteran's unreimbursed care costs bring countable income below the maximum rate, VA pays the difference monthly, which can cover a meaningful part of a $5,000-plus assisted living bill.
A simple example: a single veteran with $2,000 a month in Social Security and a pension who pays $5,600 a month for assisted living care has countable income well below zero after care costs, so VA would pay up to the full $2,424 maximum. Real cases depend on how the community's bill separates care from rent, so ask the community for an itemized statement.
Is there a VA nursing home near Knoxville?
Yes. The Senator Ben Atchley State Veterans Home in Knoxville is a Tennessee State Veterans Home with 140 licensed beds on the state's roster, certified by CMS for Medicare and Medicaid.
State veterans homes are run under state authority with VA per-diem support, and admission rules differ from VA medical centers. Its current CMS rating, inspection results and staffing appear on our nursing home list alongside every other home in the seven counties.
Who can help a Knoxville veteran apply?
Accredited veterans service officers help with VA pension and Aid and Attendance claims at no charge, through county veterans service offices and accredited veterans organizations; VA warns families against paying anyone simply to file a claim.
Gather the DD-214 discharge papers, a doctor's statement describing the need for help with daily activities, and a record of monthly care costs. Claims can take months, and benefits are typically paid back to the effective date of the claim, so file as soon as care starts.
