Loudon County's median age is 50.8 and 30.2% of residents are 65 or older. It has 6 licensed ACLFs and one nursing home. Retirees should choose acceptable communities, update legal papers and line up local help while healthy.
Why Loudon County is different
By the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates, Loudon County has about 19,237 residents aged 65 or older, 30.2% of its population, and a median age of 50.8. No other county in the region comes close. The reason is no secret: decades of retirees have settled around Tellico Village and the shores of Tellico and Fort Loudoun lakes.
Many of those retirees moved from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Florida and beyond. Their children often live hundreds of miles away. That works beautifully while both spouses are healthy, and it can turn a fall or a stroke into a crisis managed by phone.
What care exists close to home
Licensed residential care in Loudon County sits in two clusters, Lenoir City and the city of Loudon, whose 37774 ZIP code takes in much of Tellico Village.
| Facility | City | License | Beds | Secured beds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Premier Neighborhood at Tellico Village | Loudon | ACLF | 112 | 34 |
| Morning Pointe of Lenoir City | Lenoir City | ACLF | 66 | 0 |
| River Oaks Place - Loudon | Loudon | ACLF | 49 | 24 |
| The Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer's Center | Lenoir City | ACLF | 49 | 49 |
| River Oaks Place Building II | Lenoir City | RHA | 49 | 0 |
| Lakewood Place | Loudon | ACLF | 46 | 0 |

The county's one nursing home is River Grove Health and Rehabilitation in Loudon. Covenant Health Fort Loudoun in Lenoir City is the county's hospital; for larger hospitals, residents go to Turkey Creek or Parkwest in West Knox County, or Blount Memorial in Maryville.
Choose while you can still choose
The best time to pick an assisted living community is when you do not need one. Tour two or three while you are both healthy. Ask about waiting lists and what a deposit holds. Write your choices down and share them with your children and your doctor.
If one of you already shows signs of memory loss, prioritize communities with a secured unit on the same campus, so a couple can stay close if only one needs memory care. In Loudon County, three ACLFs report secured beds.
Paperwork that matters more when family is far away
Update your durable power of attorney for finances and your health care power of attorney or advance directive under Tennessee law. Documents signed in another state are generally honored, but a Tennessee elder law attorney can confirm they will be accepted by local banks and hospitals without delay.
Keep a one-page summary of medications, doctors, insurance and emergency contacts on the refrigerator and in your phone. Find your long-term care insurance policy and read the benefit trigger and elimination period now, not after a hospital stay.
A local emergency contact
Name one local friend or neighbor who can act until family arrives: let in an ambulance, feed a pet, bring clothes to the hospital. Many Tellico Village clubs and congregations have volunteer networks that do exactly this.
Then make sure your children know the names of your doctors and the communities you have chosen. A plan that lives only in your head does not help them on the worst day.
What home care looks like around the lake
Many Tellico Village residents prefer to stay home as long as possible, and in-home care can make that work. Agencies serve the area from Lenoir City, Loudon, Knoxville and Oak Ridge. Expect longer minimum visits for some addresses and ask how the agency covers a caregiver's sick day. Tennessee's 2025 median for non-medical home care is about $31 an hour.
Medicare home health is a separate benefit: skilled nursing and therapy visits for a homebound patient under a doctor's plan, with no copay. Families often combine the two after a hospital stay.
Hospice when the time comes
Hospice serves patients wherever they live, including homes around the lakes and assisted living apartments. Medicare's hospice benefit covers the team, medications and equipment related to the illness. Knowing which hospices serve your address before you need one saves time during a stressful week.
Driving and independence
Tellico Village and the lake roads are built around the car. When driving becomes unsafe, isolation follows quickly. Plan for it: learn which community volunteer drivers and transportation services cover your address, and factor the end of driving into any decision about staying in a large house on a winding road.
When one spouse needs care and the other does not
Couples often keep the house while one spouse moves to memory care or a nursing home. If TennCare ever becomes necessary, federal spousal impoverishment rules let the at-home spouse keep a protected share of assets, between $32,532 and $162,660 in 2026, and a minimum monthly income. Talk to an elder law attorney before moving money.
